On this day in 1945, Dynamo Moscow played Chelsea FC, kicking off the first of four games in their tour of Great Britain.

Dynamo were the first Soviet and European football team to tour Britain after World War II. Their visit was not just one for the books, but one for the record books. The tour was covered extensively by British and Soviet media and became the subject of literature, poetry, comic strips, and, of course, a myriad of myths and legends.

Although the Moscow club haven't faced off against British teams in years, the club's representatives attended Soccerex in Britain in September to build brand awareness, and to remind everyone of the 70th anniversary of one of football's most iconic friendly tournaments.

Here are 19 things you may not have known about the tour, one for every goal scored by the Dynamo:

19 Things You Didn't Know About Dynamo Moscow's 1945 British Tour

1. It influenced two major changes for Soviet football clubs - joining FIFA, and adding numbers to players' shirts.

2. The tour is said to have influenced the invitation of the Soviet team to the 1946 European Athletics Championships in Oslo, although they were not yet members of the IAAF.

3. Dynamo's first training session in Britain was held in slippers so as not to damage the turf.

4. The British were puzzled by Dynamo's pre-game warm-up on the pitch, as their footballers usually warmed up in the locker room.

5. One of the hotels the Dynamo stayed at was the Imperial Hotel in London.

6. Three of the four games had penalty kicks. Only one made it into the net - a spot kick from George Young that tied the game for Glasgow Rangers at Ibrox Park (2-2). Two penalties were saved by Dynamo goalkeeper "Tiger" Khomich.

7. Although the official reported attendance was lower, the match vs Chelsea had around 100,000 spectators, an all-time record for Stamford Bridge.

8. Chelsea earned £7000 from ticket sales.

9. The Soviet magazine Profile wrote that Chelsea vice-president A. V. Alexander offered Dynamo goalkeeper Alexei "Tiger" Khomich "any money" to sign a contract, "and, naturally, political asylum".

10. Rangers' George Young, along with Willie Woodburn (the latter did not play against Dynamo) were part of the team's famous "Iron Curtain" defence.

11. To avoid a color clash, Chelsea played in red.

12. Tommy Lawton, who was signed a week before the game with Dynamo, made his debut for Chelsea and scored a header to put Chelsea ahead 3-2. The match ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw. Lawton went on to make 42 appearances for the Blues, scoring 30 goals.

13. As per one of Dynamo's infamous 14 requests, one of their games was refereed by Soviet official Nikolay Latyshev. He was the first Soviet official to become a FIFA referee (1952) and to referee at a World Cup final (1958). He is also known for being the only referee to ever send off legendary goalkeeper Lev Yashin.

14. While at a hotel in Cardiff, the Dynamo players sang along to radio commentator Vadim Sinyavsky's piano playing.

15. Dynamo's 10-1 win over Cardiff is still their only game against a Welsh team.

16. Vsevolod Bobrov, a guest player from CDKA, was the top goalscorer of the tour with six goals (he also made eight assists). He later briefly played for Dynamo's rivals Spartak.

17. Glasgow Rangers, who drew 2-2 against Dynamo, were managed by Bill Struth, the club's second and longest-serving manager, and one of the most successful in British football.

18. George Orwell mentioned the tour in his rather pessimistic piece called "The Sporting Spirit", in which he wrote that he hopes the British "shan't follow up the visit of the Dynamos by sending a British team to the USSR". Follow up they did, as Arsenal and Wolverhampton visited Moscow in 1954 and 1955, while Aston Villa came in 1961.

19. Dynamo Moscow visited Britain again in 1955, and many times after. But their only other visit to feature at least four games was their tour of Britain in 1965. Their last match against a British side was a 1-4 loss to Rangers in the second round (1/32) of the UEFA Cup in 2001.

On a hot summer day, Russian and Ukrainian football clubs Dynamo Moscow and Metalist Kharkiv played an international friendly at the SV Seeboden stadium in Austria. Dynamo, who finished 4th in last season's Russian Premier League, are playing a series of pre-season exhibition games, and faced the 3rd-placed UPL side Metalist for the 3rd consecutive year. Football took no note of the political turmoil involving both countries, and rightfully so. The game featured no incredibly reckless fouls, no "cordons of police [trying to] keep the crowd from invading the field", and no political undertones, going against everything George Orwell wrote on sport at the international level (ironically, he wrote that after Dynamo's tour in Great Britain). The match was played on Nelson Mandela Day, further reaffirming what the late, great leader said about the power of sport to change the world. 90 minutes of football ended in a symbolic draw under the setting sun in Seeboden.

There could not have come a better time, nor hour, nor day for this particular game. Yet coverage was limited to Dynamo and Metalist-TV's live streams and minute-by-minute reports. The mainstream media, always quick to point fingers, stayed perfectly silent. Thousands watched the game; the rest of the world remained oblivious. Why bother to report something significant and timely, even though that is the very purpose of the news?

What Orwell should have written instead is how much the media neglects to mention the good, especially involving sport in times of war or great political tension. There are plenty of examples in recent years of both government and non-government sanctioned efforts in sports diplomacy. Two years ago, the U.S. organized a basketball training camp in Afghanistan. In 2008, NBA teams trained and played against Iran's national basketball team. Long before that, the widely-known "ping-pong diplomacy" ended both a trade and information blockade between the U.S. and China. Practically every competitive sport with a fan base, from baseball to football, has in one way or another been involved in sports diplomacy. Such stories, however, are buried under massive piles of negativity and hatred, the only things that the mainstream media believes will elicit a passionate enough reaction to keep the business of journalism afloat. Non-U.S. instances of effective sports diplomacy, such as the cricket games between India and Pakistan, remain largely overlooked. If the media take no time at all to provoke and anger, it should take no time at all to inspire a peaceful protest wherein those at war take up footballs instead of weapons.

Sport is inevitably linked with corporate power, and in today's information superhighway, those with the power to be heard should spend more time addressing the obvious facts of life that are forgotten by those cut off from the truth. But every message needs not only a sender and receiver. It also needs something that'll keep the point from being lost in translation or noise, something to carry it through the most resistant of filter bubbles. Sport transcends cultural and language barriers, carrying that message loud and clear. Now all that's needed is an amplifier.

A rare, historic encounter drew Olympic champions and famous footballers alike to the Dinamo Arena in Tbilisi, Georgia. Georgian League champions Dinamo Tbilisi took on Dynamo Moscow in the latter's last friendly before the start of the 2013/14 Russian Premier League. Both Dynamos are part of a small pool of clubs from the former Soviet Top League that have never been relegated. Before the start of the game, the two team's captains raised a flag with the Dynamo emblem, a tribute to their unity as members of the 90-year-old Dynamo Society. The final score was a true reflection of the game shown by both sides - energetic, dynamic, and always entertaining. Dinamo Tbilisi dominated possession and had plenty of options in the box. Like their namesakes from Moscow, however, they lacked an accurate finish. The home side's best chance came at the end of the first half when Giorgi Merebashvili's shot bounced off the far post. A series of poorly-timed crosses came to nothing; whatever opportunities the home side had came mostly from set pieces, and even those were almost always short of being on target.

Although they didn't test the net as often as they could have, Tbilisi only increased their dominance coming into the second half. The friendly was clearly more important to the home team. As Dynamo Moscow manager Dan Petrescu made countless substitutions, the opposition appeared confident with their starting lineup, continuing to prod at the box with most of their lineup intact. Tbilisi's Xisco, who struggled to make use of his deliveries, took advantage of a defender's bad pass back to Fernandez and chipped the ball in the net without as much as a wink. Petrescu brought on 18-year-old striker Andrei Panyukov for a lackluster Fedor Smolov, but it was too late to fix a poor performance.

A draw is reason enough for the hooligans to celebrate.

Despite the tense, exciting atmosphere of the game, the second half, as well as a defensive play overall, was an ineffective conclusion to a rather wonderful derby. Both the refereeing and the game play degraded. Cards were shown at random, and Dinamo Tbilisi players resorted to simulation, a completely unnecessary tactic considering their dominance in both halves. The biggest disappointment, however, was Dynamo Moscow's disorganized team play, a direct result of Dan Petrescu's highly experimental lineup. The glue that held the players together in the previous friendlies was nowhere to be seen - it was every man for himself. The only standout player for the Moscovites was their captain, Leandro Fernandez, whose defensive work has never faltered.

Shortcomings aside, the Dynamo Derby was one of the most exciting friendlies to date. It was one of the few real tests for the Moscovites, along with the previous friendly against BSC Young Boys, and a brilliant showcase of the amount of work that's yet to be done before the start of the season.

Dynamo Moscow got their third 2:1 friendly win in the Swiss countryside against Europa League contenders Astra Giurgiu. The Moscovites continue to improve under Dan Petrescu, playing an active, attacking game. The first half was overflowing with chances that never fully developed. Fedor Smolov, who recently returned from his loan to Anzhi Makhachkala, passed up quite a few shots in front of the net, some of which joined Sergio Ramos's penalty ball in orbiting the moon. Another player back from loan, former Liverpool midfielder Andriy Voronin, played a full 90 minutes and fed plenty of balls to 20-year-old Pavel Solomatin, but the veteran Ukrainian was the one to open the score. A foul in the box earned Dynamo their second consecutive penalty in two days. Voronin coolly netted the ball in, his first goal since his return. The Moscovites continued to attack, but the wet weather towards the end of the first half, as well as a young, less-experienced player in front, made it difficult to keep control of the ball and finish.

Unsurprisingly, Petrescu left most of the lineup intact for the second half - many of the players had participated in yesterday's friendly and needed a rest. Christian Noboa came off of the bench, but was often overshadowed by Voronin, as the Ukrainian took up his teammate's set piece duties. When it came to goal-scoring, Dynamo's veteran players shone. Voronin curled in a free kick from outside the box, and Leandro Fernandez had the perfect header to finish it off. The Dynamo captain returned to the lineup after a minor injury, defending the ball well throughout the game. Both teams suffered from bad passing accuracy and a clear inability to finish, although the Moscovites had far more missed opportunities.

Petrescu's side still have a hurdle to overcome before the start of the season. The blue-and-whites are solid on the defense and sloppy on the offense. They put pressure on the opponent. but easily lose focus towards the end of the game. Even if the other team, as in today's game, failed to create many chances throughout the two halves, one mistake from Dynamo was enough to relinquish the clean sheet. Despite the return of Luke Wilkshire, who was subbed in for Igor Shitov late into the game, the usual back four couldn't stop a sharp kick from Astra's Constantin Budescu, who saw an opportunity and picked up a lone ball right in front of an idle teammate, delivering an unpleasant surprise for the Moscovites. Budescu had several chances earlier, one of which was a powerful shot to the center saved by Roman Berezovsky.

Friendlies are a great way to monitor a team's progress before the start of the season. A little more focus and better passing technique will make a huge difference in Dynamo's game and help the team finish in the top 5 or 4 of the Premier League.

As the Champions and Europa Leagues once again begin to overshadow the rest of the footballing world, exciting games, especially friendlies, are few and far between. On Saturday, February 23rd, fans across the globe will be treated to an exceptional match-up between two formidable opponents whose last encounter lies buried deep in the recent past. Champions League contenders and reigning champions of Ukraine Shakhtar Donetsk will play against the oldest Russian club, FC Dynamo Moscow. Whenever Shakhtar and Dynamo are mentioned in the same sentence, most people think of the Dynamo from Kiev, the Pitmen's historic rivals. However, the modern era has set the stage for the Moscovites to play a challenging and entertaining 90 minutes against the team from Donetsk. The ever-successful Ukrainians have been under the management of Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu for nearly 9 years, stockpiling 6 championship wins, 4 national Cups, 4 Super Cups, and a UEFA Cup. The club reached the Champions League quarter finals for the first time in 2011, but lost 6-1 to Barcelona. Nevertheless, last season saw the club win a domestic treble. The Pitmen finished the first half of the current season at the top of the table, leaving a 13-point gap that nearly guarantees the team a championship win.

Shakhtar's efforts are currently focused on the 2012-13 CL's round of 16. The team was minutes away from winning the first leg against Dortmund but fell short of a victory just 3 minutes before the final whistle thanks to a header by Mats Hummels.

Dynamo Moscow fell short of a Europa League spell last August in a 3-1 aggregate defeat to Stuttgart. Yet the team's failure to advance to the EL group stage was incomparable to their domestic failures. A humiliating 4-0 loss to Spartak in the oldest Russian derby set the stage for a lingering presence in last place, with only one win in the first six games of the season. The club's downward spiral sparked interest from international press, some of which went so far as to say that the team faces relegation. The Blue and Whites then underwent a transformation as many of the club's personnel left amid speculation of corruption, and a new manager whose legendary playing career with the English Blues took to rebuilding the Russian club. In less than half of the regular season, Dan Petrescu elevated the team halfway up the table, leaving Dynamo just 1 win away from tying with the 4th and 5th place teams. The most important victory, however, came in late November, when the Moscovites emerged victorious in the oldest Russian derby, vengefully grabbing a 5-1 win over their city rivals. An important facet of the game went completely overlooked by the rest of the world: it was the first time Dynamo had scored 5 goals against Spartak in 64 years.

Shakhtar and Dynamo have never faced each other in a European competition, but the friendly evokes a new set of expectations for both teams as the Ukraine and Russian Premier Leagues await the start of what looks to be the most compelling spring tourney of the 21st century.

Ukraine Premier League giants and Europa League contenders FC Dnipro led Russian side Dynamo Moscow to their first loss of the new year. The match showed that Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kiev aren't the only formidable sides in Ukrainian football. Needless to say, Dynamo Moscow's performance has yet to mirror that of their famous 6-2 victory over the Ukrainian side in October 1991, when the Moscovites pummeled Dnipro 6-2, with striker Igor Kolyvanov scoring 5 goals. An interesting parallel, however, is that both today's game and the aforementioned match featured penalties. But Andrey Kobelev's saved penalty 12 years ago would only have been icing on the cake. It was Dnipro who had the penalty today after the official saw an invisible foul in the box. Today's Dynamo lacks a good goalkeeping duo, as Russian international Anton Shunin is nowhere near the skill level of veteran Roman Berezovsky. Shunin, who was in goal for the first half, failed to make the save on his 26th birthday, setting the boulder tumbling down the hill.

Dnipro were relentless, putting pressure on the Moscovites during both halves with no signs of holding back. Though the Ukrainian side didn't create too many chances themselves, they controlled the midfield and accumulated an array of set pieces. The official's whistle almost never left his lips during the first half - even the smallest infringement called for a free kick. Solomatin's early goal failed to sustain the Moscovites. Winger Balazs Dzsudzsak was Dynamo's Nani, pushing forward on the occasion but lacking the accuracy for an assist and the finishing touch necessary to score. Dnipro's few chances were far more dangerous - Brazilian midfielder Giuliano forced defender Fernandez to clear the ball from the goal line. The second half saw Dnipro captain and Ukraine international Rotan test Berezovsky's net. Dnipro manager Juande Ramos, who has previously managed Real Madrid and Tottenham, delayed rotating his team. Yet the second half newcomers included players who scored the last two goals, as well as the mighty 23-year-old winger Yevhen Konoplyanka. Dnipro's number 10 is a two-time Ukrainian Footballer of the Year, and won the EL Team of the Year award with Dnipro in 2012. He shone on the Euro 2012 in Ukraine's match against Sweden by assisting Andriy Shevchenko's game-winning goal from a corner kick, and he certainly shone in today's match. Konoplyanka easily picked up Dynamo's lousy passes, carried through attacks, and stormed the left flank with deliveries into the box. Dynamo tested the net just once, when Jakob Jantscher's one-on-one rendezvous past several defenders on the left ended in a narrow angle strike that hit the side netting. Soon enough, Dnipro's EL top-scorer Zozulya netted one in. Konoplyanka and Zozulya played out a combination that flew dangerously close to the crossbar, eager to widen the fresh 2-1 gap. The Ukrainian side scored again in added time when Igor Semshov's bad pass was taken up by Georgian midfielder Kobakhidze. The latter played the ball with Kravchenko before scoring Dnipro's 3rd and final goal.

Dnipro, whose last games in the EL were multi-goal wins against teams like Napoli and PSV, are set to face Basel at Dnipro Arena for the Round of 32 on February 14th.

Adios, Espana

Dan Petrescu's pre-season training seems to be heading in a positive direction. The players are definitely more fit and have consistently shown an eagerness on the pitch. 2013 began with mixed results for the Moscovites, who won 1-0 against Malaga's reserves, played a scoreless draw against Hungarian side Videoton, and lost to FC Dnipro. The UPL side was their must difficult opponent thus far and provided a true test for the Blue-and-Whites. If anything, the match exposed Dynamo's second Achilles' heel. Aside from the club's need for a young and skilled keeper, the players' passing and pace need plenty of work. Dynamo simply couldn't keep up with Dnipro, losing the ball tastelessly on more than one occasion. The team cracked under pressure, playing in a stressful frenzy. While the Costa del Sol Trophy is not too significant a prize, Dynamo came short of winning what would have been the team's first piece of silverware since the 1990's.

The Moscovites, who bowed out of the Europa League Qualifying playoff round at the start of last season, will leave Spain for a resort in Turkey, where they'll continue to play pre-season friendlies before the kick-off of the spring half of the 2012/13 Russian Premier League.

An Outpouring of Young Talent

Mexico U-23 vs. Spain U-23: 0-1

Two teams, both talented in different ways, took to the pitch to showcase their talent on Wednesday in the port city of Cadiz, Spain. A sea of red jerseys took to the stadium to cheer on the home team, and Spain's U-23 didn't fail to deliver. In classic Spanish style, the team took to the lead early on in the game. Their first attempt was blocked by Mexico goalkeeper Corona, but seven minutes later, the Spaniards opened the score. Javi Martinez got a great cross from a corner kick, giving him the opportunity to jump just that bit higher than Corona and head the ball in. Commentator Pablo Ramirez was right to point out the presence of Barcelona players on the squad, as the players enhanced the game with the trademark Barca style of play. The Spaniards continued to be dangerous on set pieces, but failed to go beyond a 1-0 lead. Evidently, the opposition had quite a few things up their sleeves as well. One of Mexico's magic moments came from Cruz Azul's Javier Aquino. Only David De Gea's outstretched right leg prevented a Mexico equalizer on the 38^th minute. Corona's saves were right on the money. Adrian Lopez had a poor attempt at storming Mexico's net, and Corona calmly took the ball. Mexico was great on counters, and the team's defending was simply superb. There's something to be said about preventing any Spanish team from having a goal fest. The second half included a few more heroic saves from Corona. He took the ball in the air near the upper corner of the net on the 76^th minute, showing his great ability to control the ball after it is caught. With such a rare gift and lightning-fast reflexes, he has evidently surpassed his younger fellow goalie Memo Ochoa.

It's always interesting to watch young talent play outside of the club atmosphere, and an infrequent opportunity at that. Both teams have creative players capable of making one-on-one runs, and Mexico definitely played a worthy game against the Spaniards. Spain did have the team edge, but when it came down to individual talent, Mexico was always a step ahead. The man of the match was, without a doubt, goalkeeper Corona. He was great on short-range shots, and his performance overall was stunning. I can't wait to see him perform at the London Olympics!
